Hints and Tips

The power of video

"If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million"

Most people want to see something before they read it so make sure that you have great video and photos prominently on your website. For example, what is the first thing that you want to do when you look at this newsletter?

I bet you clicked on the video before you read this sentence.

Having video on your website is also a great way to give your business a face. This is especially important for small to medium-sized service businesses such as HR consultants, trainers and even accountants. At the end of the day it's you and your people that your customers are buying into!

General Advice

Before making a video consider what action you want the viewer to take at the end - this will guide what you say, how you say it and how to end the video. It’s also important that you think about what your customers want to see, rather than what you want to show or tell them.

People generally want one of two things when they watch a video – entertainment or information. When thinking about buying something it’s usually the latter!

Keep it simple and don’t try to jam everything about your business into one big video. Viewers’ attention typically starts to wane after 2 minutes so if you have more to say than you can fit into that time then you should split it into smaller chunks.

The opening seconds of any video are vital to grab the viewer’s attention so take extra time when planning to ensure that the opening makes them want to watch on to see what else you have to say.

Next month we will discuss customer testimonial videos, one of the simplest yet most powerful ways for small-medium businesses to use video.

What we got up to in January

We have been working with international distributor of electronic components Farnell to convert 300 of their product training videos from presentations to videos and re-brand them for wider online use. Varying in length from 5 to 25 minutes the videos are mainly aimed at the designers of electronic equipment.

Work also started on the edit of all of the Abingdon footage shot throughout 2010 into tourist promotional videos focusing on different aspects of the town. Among other things the videos will be used by Choose Abingdon to encourage overseas journalists to visit and write about the town ahead of next year's Olympics in London.
